In September 1997, Focus on the Family sponsored its first national women's conference, Renewing the Heart, in Nashville, Tennessee. The response was overwhelming, with twenty thousand women attending from forty-eight states and several foreign countries, as well as thousands more on a waiting list! As a result of the tremendous ministry potential and the outpouring of interest from women around the country, Focus sponsored twelve more conferences through November 1999. Almost two hundred thousand women attended those events; many indicated a first-time commitment to Christ, and many more said it was one of the most spiritually significant days in their life.
The conference program changed somewhat from year to year but Lisa Harper, Kim Hill and Eva Whittington Self were vital parts of each and every conference. They were credited with authenticity and approachability, which is especially unique in light of the huge arenas the conferences were held in. Women attending the conferences said they felt like Lisa, Kim and Eva became personal friends, instead of just professional speakers on a far-away platform! All three expressed humility and delight that God allowed them to be involved with such a life-changing event and actually used them to reflect His grace.
When the Renewing the Heart conference series came to a close in November 1999, Lisa, Kim and Eva began to pray that God would open other doors for them to minister to women together. While they continued to teach and lead worship at events all over the country, they especially enjoyed the occasions when they got to work in tandem. And they longed for more intimate conference settings, which allow for genuine fellowship, deeper teaching, engaging worship and intercessory prayer.
God has done exceedingly more than they hoped for.
